Vandenberg Space Force Base is a military facility located on the Central Coast of California, approximately 9.2 miles northwest of Lompoc. Originally established as Camp Cooke during World War II, the site was redesignated as a space and missile testing base in 1958 and later renamed in 2021 as Vandenberg Space Force Base following the establishment of the United States Space Force.
One of the primary functions of Vandenberg Space Force Base is to facilitate the launch and testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), as well as satellite launches into various orbits. The strategic location of the base allows for efficient access to orbital trajectories over the Pacific Ocean, enabling a wide range of mission capabilities.
With a variety of launch complexes and facilities, Vandenberg Space Force Base supports both government and commercial space missions. Launch pads such as Space Launch Complex 6 and Space Launch Complex 576E have been used for a multitude of satellite deployments and scientific missions.
