How does the flight delay compensation scanner work?

EU Regulation 261/2004 entitles passengers to compensation of €250, €400 or €600 for a flight delayed by at least 3 hours or cancelled — as long as the route starts or ends in the EU and the airline can't claim extraordinary circumstances such as extreme weather. Our scanner automatically calculates the route distance and checks archived METAR weather reports for both airports on the day of the flight to assess whether such circumstances actually occurred.

What delay qualifies for compensation?: Under CJEU case law (the Sturgeon and Nelson rulings), compensation applies when the delay at the final destination is at least 3 hours.
How much compensation can I get for a delayed flight?: €250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for flights of 1,500-3,500 km and for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km, and €600 for flights over 3,500 km outside the EU.
Does bad weather rule out compensation?: Extreme weather conditions (storms, snowstorms, very strong wind) can be classified as 'extraordinary circumstances' releasing the airline from liability. Our scanner checks METAR reports from the day of the flight to assess this.
How much time do I have to file a claim?: The statute of limitations depends on the country and usually ranges from 1 to as much as 10 years. It's best to check your case as soon as possible.
